About me

I begin this blog in Fall 2007, my last semester as a Master’s student at the University of Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies.  The Master’s program follows a number of years of work in law firm libraries in Washington, D.C. , a town where lots of law is made.

I’ve worn several different hats in law libraries.  I started as a Serials Assistant, moved to Interlibrary Loan and Reference, then Legislative Reference, then Aquisitions, then Electronic Services.  Most recently, I worked as Intranet Librarian for one of the nation’s oldest and largest firms.  That was a fun job with lots of challenges and rewards, but D.C. commuting is a drag.  I decided it was time to grow my knowledge and take my career to new places by earning my Master’s degree.   Norman, Oklahoma is a big change from D.C., but change can definitely be good.  The school itself is wonderful and I highly recommend it to anyone out there who’s looking for a good MLIS program.

When I earn the Master’s, I’ll finally be a dual degreed law librarian.  Like so many in my “L.A. Law” cohort (though I never watched the show), I spent the late 80’s/early 90’s in law school.  I went to George Mason University School of Law in the D.C. suburb of Arlington, Virginia.  Today, GMUSL is in a great modern building.  It’s the pride of Virginia Square, really.  Looking out the window from the law library, you can still see the old renovated department store building that housed the school when I went there.  My classmates and I had fun riding the narrow escalators and speculating on whether our Torts classroom had once been home to Housewares or Lingerie.  GMU is a great school, whatever the building.  Long live Quantitative Methods!

About this blog

As I’m making the transition from law firm librarian to academic law librarian, my posts here may lean toward academic law library interests.  However, I expect that many of the issues raised here will find interest among law librarians in all library venues.  Digital authentication, for example, is an issue that’s of particular interest to all of us.  Since it’s a particular interest of mine, I plan to begin with that issue.  We’ll see where the road leads from there.
